Dreams

Do we dream in order to sleep or do we sleep in order to dream? Although that question remains unanswered,  researchers agree that there is a purpose and importance to dreaming. Dreaming is universal.People of all cultures have dreams and corresponding interpretations of what they mean. Even in todays materialistic world we are intrigued by the potential meaning of these visions.

Research have shown that people who are deprived from entering the dream phase of sleep (i.e. REM stage), exhibit symptoms of irritability and anxiety. In one dream study, volunteers were woken up right before they entered into the dream  state. Then they were allowed to fall back to sleep. Again, right before they enter REM sleep, they were woken up.  This continued on through the night. The volunteers slept the same amount of time as they normally did. The next day, these volunteers went about their day. They were  observed to be disoriented, depressed, crabby, and quick tempered. There was a general impairment in their daily functioning.  Some ate more than usual.  As this study continued on through several nights, subjects became more and more noticeably agitated.  Deprivation of REM sleep causes over-sensitivity, lack of concentration and memory loss.

This study shows the importance of dreaming and its role in our well-being and health. Some researchers believe that dreams help us tackle stress. It is clear that dreaming help recharge the mind and revitalize the body. Dreaming is a necessity.

Here I will look at what some common dreams mean and show examples of real drems people have asked me about, if you want more information feel free to get in touch with me.

DREAMS ABOUT TEETH-Dreams that your teeth are falling out are the most common dreams Common dream scenarios include having your teeth crumble in your hands, fall out one by one with just a light tap, grow crooked or rot. Such dreams are not only horrifying and shocking, but often leaves the dreamer with a lasting image of the dream. So what does it mean?

One theory is that dreams about your teeth reflect your anxiety about your appearance and how others perceive you. Sadly, we live in a world where good looks are valued highly and your teeth play an important role in conveying that image. Teeth are used in the game of flirtations, whether it be a dazzling and gleaming smile or affectionate necking. These dreams may stem from a fear of your sexual impotence or the consequences of getting old. Teeth are an important feature of our attractiveness and presentation to others. Everybody worries about how they appear to others. Caring about our appearance is natural and healthy.

Another rationalization for these falling teeth dream may be rooted in your fear of being embarrassed or making a fool of yourself in some specific situation. These dreams are an over-exaggeration of your worries and anxiety.

Teeth are used to bite, tear, chew and gnaw. In this regard, teeth represent power. And the loss of teeth in your dream may be from a sense of powerlessness. Are you lacking power in some current situation? Perhaps you are having difficulties expressing yourself or getting your point across. You feel frustrated when your voice is not being heard. You may be experiencing feelings of inferiority and a lack of self-confidence in some situation or relationship in your life. This dream is an indication that you need to be more assertive and believe in the value of your own opinion.

In the latest research, it has been shown that women in menopause have frequent dreams about teeth. This may be related to getting older and/or feeling unattractive and less feminine.

Traditionally, it was thought that dreaming that you did not have teeth, represent malnutrition which may be applicable to some dreamers

DREAMS ABOUT NUDITY-So you are going about your normal routine - going to work, waiting for the bus, or just walking down the street - when you suddenly realize that you are stark naked. Dreaming that you are completely or partially naked is very common. Nudity symbolizes a variety of things depending on your real life situation.

Becoming mortified at the realization that you are naked in public, reflects your vulnerability or feelings of shamefulness. You may be hiding something and are afraid that others can see right through you. Metaphorically, clothes are a means of concealment. Depending on the type of clothes you wear, you can hide your identity or be someone else. But without them, everything is hanging out for all to see. You are exposed and left without any defenses. Thus your naked dream may be telling you that you are trying to be something that you really are not. Or you are fearful of being ridiculed and disgraced. Such anxieties are elevated especially in situations where you are trying to impress others. Perhaps you are in a new work environment or in a new relationship. You may be expressing fears or apprehension in revealing your true feelings in such situations.

Nudity also symbolizes being caught off guard. Finding yourself naked at work or in a classroom, suggests that you are unprepared for a project at work or school. You may be unprepared in making a well informed decision. With all eyes on you, you fear that some flaw will be brought to public attention. You fear that people will see through your true self and you will be exposed as a fraud or a phony.

Often times, when you realize that you are naked in your dream, no one else seems to notice. Everyone else in the dream is going about their business without giving a second look at your nakedness. If this happens in your dream, then it implies that your fears are unfounded; no one will notice except you. You may be magnifying the situation and making an issue of nothing.

If you dream that you are proud of your nakedness and show no embarrassment or shame, then it symbolizes your unrestricted freedom. You have nothing to hide and are proud of who you are. The dream is about a new sense of honesty, openness, and a carefree nature. Perhaps you are trying to get to the bare facts. Alternatively, the dream may be telling you that you are drawing the wrong kind of attention to yourself. You want to get noticed, but are going about it the wrong way.

DREAMS ABOUT FALLING- Falling dreams are another theme that is quite common in the world of dreams. Contrary to a popular myth, you will not actually die if you do not wake up before your hit the ground during a fall.

As with most common dream themes, falling is an indication of insecurities, instabilities, and anxieties. You are feeling overwhelmed and out of control in some situation in your waking life. This may reflect the way you feel in your relationship or in your work environment. You have lost your foothold and can not hang on or keep up with the hustle and bustle of daily life. When you fall, there is nothing that you can hold on to. You more or less are forced toward this downward motion without any control. This lost of control may parallel a waking situation in your life.

Falling dreams also often reflect a sense of failure or inferiority in some circumstance or situation. It may be the fear of failing in your job/school, loss of status, or failure in love. You feel shameful and lack a sense of pride. You are unable to keep up with the status quo or that you don't measure up.

According to Freudian theory, dreams of falling indicate that you are contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse. You maybe lacking indiscretion.

Falling dreams typically occur during the first stage of sleep. Dreams in this stage are often accompanied by muscle spasms of the arms, legs, and the whole body. These sudden contractions, also known as myclonic jerks. Sometimes when we have these falling dreams, we feel our whole body jerk or twitch and we awaken from this jerk. It is thought that this jerking action is part of an arousal mechanism that allows the sleeper to awaken and become quickly alert and responsive to possible threats in the environment.

According to biblical interpretations, dreams about falling have a negative overtone and suggest that man is acting and walking according to his own way of thinking and not those of the Lord.

DREAMS ABOUT FLYING- Flying dreams fall under a category of dreams known as lucid dreaming. Lucid dreams occur when you become aware that you are dreaming. Many dreamers describe the ability to fly in their dreams as an exhilarating, joyful, and liberating experience.

If you are flying with ease and enjoying the scene and landscape below, then it suggests that you are on top of a situation. You have risen above something. It may also mean that you have gained a different perspective on things. Flying dreams and the ability to control your flight is representative of your own personal sense of power.

Having difficulties staying in flight indicates a lack of power in controlling your own circumstances. You may be struggling to stay aloft and stay on course. Things like power lines, trees, or mountains may further obstruct your flight. These barriers represent a particular obstacle or person who is standing in your way in your waking life. You need to identify who or what is hindering you from moving forward. It may also be an indication of a lack of confidence. You need to believe in yourself and not be afraid.

If you are feeling fear when you are flying or that you feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success.

In reality, we cannot really fly, of course. Thus, such dreams may represent that which is beyond your physical limitations. In your mind, you can be anybody and do anything. Another way of interpreting flying dreams is that these dreams symbolize your strong mind and will. You feel undefeatable and nobody can tell you what you cannot do and accomplish. Undoubtedly these dreams leave you a great sense of freedom.

DREAMS OF BEING CHASED- Chase dreams is one of several common dream themes. As with most of the common dreams, they often stem from feelings of anxiety in your walking life. Running is an instinctive response to physical threats in your environment. In these dreams, you can be pursued by an attacker, an animal or an unknown figure, who wants to hurt or possibly kill you. In turn, you run, hide or try to outwit your pursuer. Your actions in the dream parallel how you respond to pressure and cope with fears, stress or various situations in your waking life. Instead of confronting the situation, you are running away and avoiding it. Ask yourself who is the one chasing you so that you can gain understanding and insight on the source of your fears and anxieties.

The pursuer or attacker who is chasing you in your dream may also represent an aspect of yourself. Your own feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, and possibly love, can assume the appearance of threatening figure. The shadowy figure can also symbolize rejected characteristics of your self. You may be projecting these feelings onto the unknown chaser. Next time you have a chase dream, turn around and confront your pursuer. Ask them why they are chasing you. Perhaps you are running away from something. What are you trying to run from?

If you are the one doing the chasing, then the dream may highlight your drive and ambition to go after something you want. Or perhaps the dream suggests that you are falling behind and having to catch up with everyone else.

Consider the distance or gap between you and your pursuer. This indicates your closeness to the issue. If the pursuer is gaining on you, then it suggests that the problem is not going to go away. The problem will surround you until you confront and address it. However, if you are able to widen the gap between your pursuer, then the problem is becoming less and less of an issue. You are able to successful distance yourself from the problem. In essence, the problem is fading away.

A more direct analysis of chase dreams is the fear of being attacked. Such dreams are more common among women than men, who may feel physically vulnerable in the urban environment. These dreams are inspired by fears of violence and sexual assault in which we are so over-exposed from the media, which magnifies such fears.

DROWNING- To dream of drowning denotes loss of property and life but if you are rescued, things will get better.

DEATH- to dream OF the dead is usually a warning. To dream you are talking to a dead relative warns you of coming distress.

peoples dreams

case study 1- this lady was having two dreams, one about finding out she had cancer, she was along in the house with her daughter and then went to phone her parents only to find out her mother was in a residential home. The second dream was about her holding a baby but she wasnt sure whos baby it was. below is the interpretation.

the first dream I looked at was the one regarding cancer. We may know rationally that we do not have cancer but still fear itit is a common fear and to dream that we have it is indicates that we are out of harmony with our body, it also indicates fear of illness. You may have rationalised this fear when you are awake but subconciously it still plays on your mind, when a serious illness appears in a dream it can shows something 'eating away' at us- usually a negative idea or concept. Since the astrological sign cancer represents females, i think in a womans dream this can represent a womans fear that she is unable to nurture her children the way she would like. The fact that it is your daughter that is there makes me think it is with her the issues? Your hubby not being there shows me that perhaps you are feeling lonely and isolated from your hubby. The second part of your dream about trying to tell your parents and not being able to get in touch with your mother suggests that you need to communicate more with her? and you are worried about her health, even if she says she is fine! you need more communication! I dont for one minute believe that the dream means you are ill hun or that it is a premonition.

The 2nd dream about the baby Ill look at now. To dream about a baby represents vunerability and feelings over which you have no control. The fact that you dont know who's baby it is suggests to me that you are uncertain of people you are aware of the ability of others to hurt you and your family and this worries you. Dreaming of a baby can also indicate that the dreamer has the need for a feeling of purity.

case study 2- a woman having this dream often, her son was drowning and she was standing watching but as she cant swim she was too scared to help, she was just screaming and there was no-one around to help. Below is my interpretation.

It is not always a bad sing to dream of drowning, whether the person is dreaming of themselves drowning or another person. Usually dreaming this can be because of a fear.

It’s the subconscious way of letting your body and mind know you are afraid of something. The fear however may have nothing to do with water or with drowning. In your case it does, it is simply your subconcious playing on your worst fear. Dreaming that you are drowning can mean that you are overwhelmed by emotions or repressed issues that is coming back to haunt you. I think its to do with your own fear of drowning and you are putting it on to the most precious thing in your life, your son. To help have you thought about perhaps going to adult swimming lessons?

hope this makes sense to you :)
